One of the lessons I learned early on was to turn around and look behind me while I am walking. Why? Well, there is so much you may miss if you don’t! What may look ordinary from one angle looks totally different from another, or it may be the way the light affects your subject.

I have taken this same principle to heart when it comes to photographing flowers – the underside is often just as beautiful or interesting as the top. I know these orange poppies are very common, yet I still enjoy seeing them. I had never paid much attention to the underside, however, so now you can see what we have all been missing. The graceful lines in the petals, muted color, and the strange “jute rope” look of the stem all demonstrate the value of taking a closer look at the opposite side.

Thank you Kym – there are a lot of interesting angles that show details most people miss. It’s up to us to show folks what they are missing!
