Lost Feathers

Lost Feathers
It was one of those blustery early winter days, and I was re-visiting a nature preserve nearby. It was too early for snow, and most everything had dried up and turned brown. Visually, there just wasn’t much to look at! As the wind blew past the dried up stalks around me, I noticed movement and went to see what it was. The feathers from some unknown bird (or birds) had been snagged and were waving in the breeze like a flag. Just when I thought there was nothing interesting to see in that bleak landscape…

That’s a really good picture. I like how the black and white coloring not only shows the bleakness of the landscape surrounding the subject of the photo, but also how it seems to make the feathers blend in. When I first looked at the picture I thought it was actually a flower and it took me a few seconds to see that it was feathers. A really lovely shot which to me seems to epitomize your description quite well.

Thank you so much for your comments! When I first saw this, the thought of something lost and lonely came to mind, and I knew I had to capture the image. Feel free to visit my website as well – I have an entire gallery of black and whites, if that interests you.
